The state legislature created a committee in June 2001 to look for ways of reducing school districts' dependency on local property taxes. They've recommended halving the real-estate taxes of all property owners. It's about time.

The problem with cutting property owner taxes in half is that the money for schools must be made up, and that means raising the state income tax. Cutting the taxes in half is extreme, especially when there are many vital programs scrambling for funding.
