About 5th Estate

I am Andrew D. Blechman, Editor-in-Chief of 5th Estate, and I welcome you to our magazine, which provides news and opinion for the Internet voter. The name of our Internet-only magazine reflects our view that this technology-driven medium has created a new and revolutionary fifth center of power -- that of the Internet voter.

Ordinary folks, who can't afford to lobby members of congress over expensive meals or own their own printing press, now have the power to be heard and affect change. Historically, there used to be just four centers of power, or "estates" -- the nobility, the clergy, the merchant class, and later, the media. If you weren't a member, you were out of luck.

Here at 5th Estate, we are working to empower our readers using Vote.com technology. Readers can vote on many topics addressed in our articles, and their votes are instantly sent to where it counts most - the folks responsible for making decisions, such as your congressional representatives.

Our goal is to provide you with journalism that informs and stirs up debate through a mixture of balanced news articles and opinion pieces from all sides of the spectrum. As professional journalists, our editors and writers are committed to presenting articles that are balanced and fair, and whose accuracy has been checked. We have no ax to grind, and we have no allegiance to any political party. Our point of view is that of a concerned citizen and voter. The opinions contained in columns that appear under our banner are those of the writers, and not necessarily those of the editors.

We look forward to your feedback as we explore new ways that the Internet can be used to make good journalism even more compelling. Feel free to contact any of our writers or editors, particularly either myself or Senior Editor/Art Director Kathy Jones.

Enjoy!
