Steve Forbes officially ended his presidential bid on February 10,
2000.
Malcolm "Steve" Forbes, Jr. has been President and
CEO of Forbes Inc., and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Forbes, since 1990. A businessman whose fortune
is estimated at $439 million, he followed in the footsteps of his father Malcolm
Forbes Sr. who built the company into one of the publishing world's giants.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, the younger Forbes
earned a bachelors degree in history from Princeton University in 1970.
Upon graduation, he was given an entry-level position at Forbes Inc., moving up
to eventually replace his father at the top. He also enlisted in the
New Jersey National Guard where he served for six years.
In 1996, after spending his entire life in the
private sector, Mr. Forbes decided to run for the Republican Presidential
nomination in 1996. He staged surprising wins in the Arizona and Delaware
primaries, but ultimately lost the nomination to Senator Bob Dole.
Over the past two years, Mr. Forbes has traveled to
all 50 states trying to "help conservatives develop a compelling agenda, raise
money and prepare for an exciting new century of freedom." He advocates
revolutionizing Social Security by allowing personal retirement accounts, a
version of the "flat tax" that brought him so much success in 1996, along with
medical and educational savings accounts.
Although he's never held elective office, Steve
Forbes has spent his life in the political arena with leaders from around the
world. President Reagan named him Chairman of the Board for International
Broadcasting in 1985. There, Steve oversaw Radio Free Europe and Radio
Liberty which beamed messages of free markets and elections behind the Iron
Curtain. He was reappointed by President Bush and served until
1993.
In August of 1996, Forbes launched Americans for
Hope, Growth and Opportunity. The group strives to "continue building
support for his positive, forward-looking conservative agenda." In
addition to his work with political groups, Steve Forbes serves on the board of
numerous organizations, including the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and
the American Enterprise Institute. He is also on the Board of Trustees of his
alma mater Princeton University, and is on the Board of Overseers of the
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Steve and Sabina Forbes have been married for
twenty-seven years. They have five daughters: Roberta, Sabina, Catherine,
Moira and Elizabeth. Mr. Forbes is fifty-two years
old.
