On February 6, a new patients' rights bill was introduced that would give patients a modified right to sue HMOs. Managed care plans shouldn't enjoy immunity from responsibility, and states that allow lawsuits have not faced a flood of litigation.

Managed care health plans were created to stop rising medical costs. That goal has largely been achieved, but lawsuits were a major factor in what caused the high costs in the first place. Allowing more litigation would be bad medicine for the economy.
