The Howard Government needs to admit the GST is pushing prices up. The burden needs to be eased. A rollback would actually boost the budget's bottom line, due to anticipated billion-dollar gains from unexpectedly rapid economic growth.

Governments are under increasing funding pressure. The tax's promise of growing revenues is essential to fund rising demand for services from an ageing population. Labor's GST rollback policy could cost about $600 million a year.
