Pilots are entrusted with passengers' lives. Under this proposal, which is overwhelmingly supported by the largest pilots' union, crewmembers that choose to participate would be required to undergo training, background checks and psychological testing.

Implementing this risky proposal would be very problematic. What if the gun got into the wrong hands? What if one pilot wanted a firearm but the other did not? How would a pilot who is strapped into his seat by shoulder harnesses be able to use a gun?
