The Australian Defence Force must be bolstered. The deputy chairman of parliament's defence subcommittee, NSW Labor MP Roger Price, warned the army was too small to play a role in any campaign without using reserves or reintroducing conscription.

Defence subcommittee chairman Allan Ferguson said the Australian Defence Force was in good shape. Mr Howard said: "We are satisfied that this country will have a capacity if requested to make a positive and important contribution."
