Mr Howard said: "Whilst the destruction of the al-Qa'ida network must be our first priority, the long-term aim of this war is to demonstrate that organised, international, state-sanctioned terrorism will not be tolerated by the world community."

Australian personnel and equipment should not be committed to a conflict that could last longer than the Vietnam War. Nothing will be resolved by a war that will cost more lives. This "new kind of war" may only lead to more trouble.
