Very robust growth figures - 1.1 per cent for the September quarter - show that Australia's budget and interest rate strategies are right. "The domestic economy has strengthened at a time when the international economy has turned down," Costello said.

He is gambling on the US emerging from recession before it does severe damage to our economic performance. Opposition Treasury spokesman Bob McMullan said that after the Government had wasted its surpluses it could only hope for a turn-around in the US.
