The National Road Transport Commission has recommended the nationwide 50km/h urban speed zone after finding the move would help avoid thousands of accidents a year and lead to only slight delays.

The RACQ said the plan was "ludicrous" because 50km/h was too slow for major roads. It would take a massive increase in traffic police to enforce the new speed zone because motorists would fail to see its value.
