Most asylum-seekers choose to leave situations of safety and security
							The Immigration Minister's comments grossly oversimplify the issue

The Immigration Minister said people were choosing to leave situations of safety and security, often in transit countries between their homeland and Australia, to seek refugee status here. This is costing genuine asylum-seekers a place.

Refugee Council of Australia spokeswoman Margaret Piper told The Australian newspaper, "Rather than being a lifestyle choice, in many instances it's a matter of life and death." Mr Ruddock's comments were irresponsible.
