Vietnam has condemned McCain's use of the epithet

On Thursday, February 17, Arizona Senator John McCain was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle as saying to reporters, "I hate the gooks.  I will hate them as long as I live."

The following Monday, the government of Vietnam condemned McCain's comments.

"The fact Mr. John McCain uses such words and makes such statements that lack goodwill have hurt Vietnamese and Asian people," said Hanoi's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh.  "This statement is not worthy of a U.S. Senator, especially one running for the U.S. presidency.  This obviously does not bring credit to him individually nor benefit U.S. foreign policy."
