The Bureau of Land Management is rounding up thousands of wild horses, which are a living legacy of the Wild West. The horses are then turned over for adoption, and many end up in slaughterhouses. Animal protection groups have sued to halt the plan.

As the population of wild horses has grown, the animals have damaged the grazing lands of cattle and sheep. The bureau is rounding up the horses in an effort to preserve the habitat for all the animals that graze on it. That's good for the environment.
