The federal government rarely steps in after a state court rules


The Constitution says "nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb."  In practice, it is very rare for the federal government to step in after a case has already been decided on the state level.  Assistant US Attorney Alan Vinegrad told the Christian Science Monitor "the number of times it happens in civil rights cases is one or two a year."
