In some states, to get a marriage license you must have a blood test to prove that you are free of syphilis and submit the results to the Marriage Bureau. It is for the benefit of all citizens that states track this serious sexually transmitted disease.

This test is an inconvenient and annoying waste of time. Such an antiquated law finds few positive results, fails to take into account the declining incidence of the disease and keeps the focus off the need for tests for more current STDs such as HIV.
