The Portland School Committee is considering whether to give some school officials a raise as high as 26 percent. There hasn't been an opportunity to give the workers a raise for years. Approving one now would secure the increase rate for years to come.

At a time when families are making every sacrifice possible to save money it's inappropriate to give school officials a 26-percent pay increase. Gov. King has had to cut school assistance to make up for an approximate $180 million state budget shortfall.
