With only a quarter of American children walking or bicycling to school and the number of overweight children tripling since 1980, this needs to become a national health objective that aims at building physical activity into a child's daily schedule.

Getting more kids to walk to school sounds nice but it is unrealistic. Most kids live too far or in areas where it is too difficult or unsafe to walk to school, and parents are concerned about inclement weather and more serious matters such as crime.
