State transit funding cuts are taking their toll on the entire system. The state requires the transit agency to operate within a balanced budget, but they don't provide enough money to do so. Half of the ort Authority's budget comes from state sources.

The Port Authority finished the last fiscal year with a $7 million budget deficit. The cuts are necessary because state revenue for 2002-02 is estimated to be $1 million less than the previous year. Everyone is going to have to live with serious cuts.
