Gov. Gray Davis has signed a bill that requires water efficiency in clothes washers, a move that could be mirrored across the US. The southern part of California is nearing its fourth straight year of drought conditions. This move is necessary.

The cost of replacing washing machines is going to be unprecedented. Many poor and middle class families are going to feel the blunt of these new restrictions and there's no evidence to prove without a doubt that it will help fix the water shortage.
