Vermont Governor Howard Dean said recently that if he were elected president, he would support recognizing marriage rights for same-sex couples. Once any state recognizes these civil unions, the federal government must do the same.

There's only one state, Vermont, which formally recognizes relationships of gay and lesbian couples. Why should the federal government recognize a union that most of America finds offensive or inappropriate? Howard Dean's suggestion isn't realistic.
