| Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Simon Hughes has said that courts should be freed to deliver tougher sentences on those convicted of violent crimes. He said: "Cheque fraud may be wrong, but it is not in the same league as stabbing somebody." |
While few would object to tougher sentences on those convicted of violent crimes, the Hughes approach would send a message to non-violent criminals that they will not be penalized for their crimes. That would invite more non-violent crime. |
