Transportation Security Administration chief James Loy says he wants to start phasing out random searches at airports once all federal screeners are in place. Phasing out the searches will go a long way toward making air travel less burdensome.

The advocacy group Aviation Consumer Action Project opposes the change in procedures because the best security involves several layers. Taking away random checks would mean one less layer of security - and one more opportunity for would-be terrorists.
