The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed that airlines install new seats to help save lives. The new seats would avert 114 deaths and 133 serious injuries in the first 20 years. No cost is too high when so many lives are at stake.

In a perfect world, planes would be so safe that crashes would never be fatal. But it's not a perfect world. Adding new seats would accomplish little because most crashes are too severe for the seats to make a difference. Airlines just can't afford this.
