Former NFL defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo revealed that he's gay and will formally announce it on HBO's "Real Sports" show. Tuaolo retired in 1999 and a former teammate said he would've been "eaten alive" if he'd come out. Times haven't changed.

Many athletes have feared the reaction of their teammates after being caught taking drugs or committing a crime, only to find that players accepted them after the truth came out. Gays who are honest about themselves gain respect. There's no need to hide.
