For the first time, irradiated meat will be made available to schools. The process rids foods of parasites and bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella by exposing them to low-level gamma rays or electrons. Irradiating meat is safe and effective.

Many activists feel that the irradiated meat is unsafe and could produce unforeseen side effects if given to young children. The biggest problem is that the process destroys vitamins and nutrients and can produce chemicals that produce birth defects.
