Since AOL merged with Time Warner, the America Online unit has fallen on tough times and the corporation's stock has fallen dramatically. Now Steve Case may be floating the idea of spinning off the unit, which has been a drag on the company.

AOL Time Warner's synergy is a tremendous asset, so breaking it up wouldn't make sense. It's a powerhouse in global media, and it doesn't make sense to throw in the towel before the two formerly separate companies are given time to succeed together.
