In a decision praised by airport officials, the bill would delay the mandatory screening of all bags. The Dec. 31 deadline is unreachable. Airlines need extra time to properly install the equipment. They should take time to do the job right.

Under the newly proposed Homeland Security Bill, screening of air travelers' bags would be delayed at least a year. That's far too long to wait. Terrorists will likely attempt an attack before then, so we can't allow airline security gaps to continue.
